The Oral Needs
by let's OT
The oral stage is the first stage of psychosexual development in Freud’s Theory of Psychoanalysis, wherein the infant’s mouth is the focus of libidinal gratification derived from the pleasure of feeding at the mother’s breast, and from the oral exploration of his or her environment, i.e. the tendency to place objects in the mouth.is a central element of psychoanalytic sexual drive theory.
As oral fixation maylead to Neurosis , Occupational therapist have been using the principle of the psychosexual development in evaluating and designing activities to treat individuals with neurosis.
‘Do oral needs persist in normals beyond the age of 2’ ……..may be YES ….these needs have been transformed into much higher level of socially acceptable activities….
…..they may lead to gratification of the impulses or cause an equally opposite reaction.
